Due to ongoing researches, there have been significant changes in the guideline recommendation for the treatment of hypertension. While evidence from past studies supports that treatment of hypertension in diabetes patients helps prevent complications, the optimal blood pressure goal is not known. Ben Alencherry and colleagues published a review paper in the Springer Journal under the title “Treatment of Hypertension in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: a Contemporary Approach”. The summary of this paper is given below:

Objective:

To provide optimal BP target and potential treatment approach in diabetes patient.

Method:

The article summarizes findings from all topical collections available for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Findings:

A BP target of ≤ 130/80 mmHg in patients with DM was recommended by recent BP guidelines from several societies. This recommendation differs from previous guideline recommendations. While there are no guidelines that support these recommendations, long-term studies support the more aggressive BP targets when treating hypertension in patients with DM. Studies recommend treatment strategies encompassing contemporary therapeutic options.
