Dr. Banshi Saboo – Guest Editor for September 2021
Metabolic Health Digest’s September 2021 edition had put forward articles, that are persistent with its aim of disseminating new knowledge and skilling the fraternity.
While the benefits of weight loss is being well known, the published study in this edition suggests that patients should be encouraged for weight loss as it helps to achieve remission and withdrawal of antihypertensive drugs. Another article highlights the bidirectional association between Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) which must be frequently assessed inpatients. Article mentioning risk factors for OSA and its treatment approach is one of the important articles of this month.
As there is development in diabetes technology, I’m happy to come across researches supporting such technologies as this month publication discuss studies suggesting CGM use in a hospital setting like other vitals. Additionally, CGM role in assessing aortic stiffness and the new treatment approach should not be missed by readers.
Articles emphasized on other types of diabetes such as FCPD, post-pancreatitis diabetes mellitus (PPDM). Less known relationships like the effect of hyperglycemic-hyperinsulinemia and IFG on heart parameters and CVD risk, NAFLD, and GDM are also discussed.
HbA1c which is considered a gold standard of diabetes diagnosis, it can be seen that it does not however deliver data on glycaemic variability or glucose stability. This factor has a similar outcome even in terms of Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG). Besides, research findings also highlighted the link between greater daily glucose variability and greater aortic stiffness playing a role in the pathogenesis of CVD.
Another article covered a case report which highlighted the treatment of plasmpharesis in hypertriglyceridemia. Mind-boggling researches spreading awareness for the importance of oral health in diabetes patients, guiding practitioners about acceptance of different drugs and insulin by patients is something we should learn from and include in daily practice.
The case study by Dr. Kiran Shah, highlights consequences of high dose of T. Pioglitazone with a case of T. Pioglitazone induced diabetic macular edema. Additionally, Dr. Rutul Thakkar’s case is an exemplary case of treatment approach enhanced by technology intervention.
Finally, I take the opportunity to share a huge achievement by the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI). Under the Defeat Diabetes campaign, we conducted one million tests on Sep 29th, and as you are reading the editorial we have the Diabetes Vijat Rath that has taken off from Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad & is all set to reach New Delhi touching several lives, creating the change & spreading awareness. On this note, I conclude this piece…
Happy Reading and Happy Learning!
