Sleep Apnea Prevalence and Severity among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
There exists a bidirectional relationship between sleep disorders and diabetes; sleep disorders can increase the risk of developing insulin resistance, whereas diabetes would deteriorate sleep quality. Amr Abul-hasan and colleagues conducted research under the title “Sleep Apnea Prevalence and Severity among Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus” published in SVU- International Journal of Medical Sciences. The summary of this research is given below:
Objective:
To assess the prevalence and severity of sleep apnea among type II diabetes patients.
Method:
A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 45 cases with type II diabetes mellitus. It was carried out with patients admitted to Aswan University hospital or sought medical advice in the out-patient clinics. The study continued from 2017 to 2019. For each patient, the clinical and demographic data were collected, blood glucose levels and HBA1c were evaluated and full night attended polysomnography was completed.
Findings:
The study concludes higher prevalence of sleep apnea and its severity among type II diabetes mellitus patients. The common pattern of sleep apnea was obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The study also observed higher AHI in the patients with the clinical picture of neuropathy.
